This year, directors of the Washington State Council have created a new award in the name of a member who has made a significant contribution to the council, Robert Gerlach. Robert has been a friend and steady contributor to the council as have many FFI members. What makes his contribution notable is that year in and year out he used his time and skill to lift up other initiatives and members of the Washington State Council. His 12-year commitment to casting instruction at the week-long summer camp Washington FFI operates in partnership with Trout Council Unlimited help sustain the program and expand FFI’s role in the fly fishing community in Washington and beyond. This award is to recognize the skilled, steady and humble contributions of FFI members who share Robert’s passion for our sport and our future.
The Washington State Council of Fly Fishers International has established the Robert Gerlach Award to honor FFI members who go beyond the duties of an office or program to elevate the organization’s mission of education, conservation, and community. More than enhancing individual skills, this award celebrates those who broaden FFI’s impact, fostering connections in a disconnected world. By recognizing commitments that span multiple organizational roles, multiple years, and notably expand the reach of FFI, the award underscores the transformative power of shared passion and dedication within the organization.
The criteria for the Robert Gerlach Award require a minimum of eight years of exemplary service to FFI, with contributions predominantly at the regional and state level. Recipients must have demonstrated ongoing commitment to expanding the role of FFI in Washington. This accolade within FFI signifies longevity, service and dedication to advancing the organization’s core values and inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.
